Anxious symptoms are the primary concern reported by SCAPS clients. SCAPS offers a three-session workshop each semester to help clients learn skills to better manage these symptoms holistically. The workshop lasts about 50 minutes. FALL DATES TBD
We provide free and confidential mental health services for all actively enrolled students using a brief and focused treatment model.
To get started, students may visit one of our two offices or call us at (706) 737-1471. We operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday when the university is open.
After a Triage Appointment, a student might be scheduled for a counseling session with a SCAPS clinician.
Individual Counseling
Initial Appointments鈥痑re a good fit for students who believe that their mental health concerns can be addressed via brief counseling services, with a limited number of Follow-Up Appointments. These appointments are scheduled for 50 minutes.
Single Solution-Focused Appointments鈥痑re a good fit for students who believe that a one-time counseling appointment could help with an immediate concern. The focus is on identifying the student鈥檚 problem and collaborating with them on possible solutions. These appointments are scheduled for 50 minutes.
Relational Counseling
Relational counseling is available to unmarried and currently enrolled students. It is a good fit for those who would like to receive help with their relationship. To get started, only one of the individuals needs to attend a Triage Appointment.
After the Triage Appointment, both students can be scheduled with a clinician for a Couples Initial Appointment鈥痶o begin brief therapy.鈥疶hese appointments are scheduled for 50 minutes.
Group counseling is a great option for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who want to learn more about themselves and others in a safe and confidential space. Group therapy has been shown to be an effective form of treatment for a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression, and can strengthen relationship skills. Students interested in joining a group should call us or discuss it with their individual clinician.
What to Expect
We see group counseling as a 鈥渓aboratory鈥 to experiment with new ways of being in the world and with others. Group members are encouraged to participate at their own pace, and verbal participation is not required, though members generally find that they get out of group what they put into it. Over time, members are encouraged to push themselves and take risks to practice new ways of thinking and behaving. Groups generally run about 90 minutes, include four to eight students, and are co-led by two clinicians.

Let鈥檚 Talk
鈥淟et鈥檚 Talk鈥 Consultations give students a chance to speak informally with a therapist outside of the counseling center. No appointment necessary.
We offer brief individual and relational counseling, group therapy, and crisis services, in addition to psychoeducational workshops, consultations, prevention and outreach initiatives, and advocacy.
Students do not pay anything out of pocket and do not need health insurance.
All conversations, by telephone, video, and in person, are confidential, with few exceptions (e.g., when the client is determined to be a threat to the health and safety of self or another, including abuse of a child, elder or disabled adult).
Short-term counseling allows us to serve the greatest number of students with limited resources, and it can address a wide range of concerns. Most clients find that one to six sessions can adequately address their needs, with some receiving fewer, and some receiving more. Five appointments is about average.
Our clinicians help students who want longer-term counseling (generally more than eight sessions) find providers outside of the university. Students can also do their own research using tools such as to find therapists who work with college students.
Yes! In addition to in-person services, we offer video sessions via Doxy.me, a secure telemental health platform.
The first step to connecting with SCAPS is a Triage Appointment. This is a brief phone call with a clinician to discuss students鈥 concerns and determine the best services to address them. To schedule a triage, students may visit one of our two offices or call us.鈥
