Japan

Travel Dates: June 7 - 18, 2027

  About / Important Dates / Courses / Program Costs / Itinerary /

This summer study abroad program in Japan offers a hands-on introduction to marine biology through fieldwork in diverse coastal ecosystems. Students explore marine biodiversity, ecological processes, and conservation challenges through direct observation, species identification, and basic data collection. Guided by faculty and local Japanese biologists, experiences include rocky intertidal zones, coastal habitats, fisheries environments, and visits to research labs in Tokyo and aquariums.

The program also examines human genetic diversity and adaptation, using Japan as a case study to explore how historical populations shaped modern traits. Throughout the experience, students connect science with cultural context, gaining insight into Japan鈥檚 relationship with the ocean, sustainability practices, and its blend of tradition and innovation.

Academic coursework is balanced with cultural activities, including historical site visits, basic language learning, and guided exploration, helping students build global awareness alongside scientific and professional skills.
