Block 11

Clinical Experience Block 11

The PCL Clinical Experience includes: Telemedicine Patient Encounter Session, Clinical Procedures Session, and Ultrasound Session.

Schedule of the day

EVERYONE

  • Log into EPIC and ensure clinic is set up correctly-staff will check you off

 Telemedicine Encounters (1:00 or 1:45 start) 

  • M1 students will be conducting the visit as M2 students advise
  • M1 complete the SOAP presentation and Debrief Qualtrics form with a faculty member during your debrief session
  • M2 complete the staff documentation feedback Qualtrics

       

Clinical Procedures (1:00 or 2:00 start) 
  • M2 Students will be reviewing vital sign assessment with their M1 mentees
  • Fill out the provided vitals sheet while discussing correct methods, possible errors, and masked vs white coat hypertension

2:50 - 5:00PM

 

M1 Ultrasound Time 

*REMINDER: Everyone needs to consent for educational scanning*

  • M1 students will be scanning the RUQ, LUQ, Subcostal 4 chamber, and Pelvis
  • Students must send themselves the RUQ image to submit on post-quiz in D2L
  • M1 debrief survey will be completed by a faculty member as you review images

 

 

M2 Ultrasound Time 

*REMINDER: Everyone needs to consent for educational scanning*

  • M1 students will be obtaining the 2nd half of the RUSH exam (FAST + AAA + GB) Upload transverse view of Aorta with measurement for post-quiz submission. 
  • Save loops of your images to review with a faculty member. You do not need to label any structures! 
  • Fill out the RUSH Block 11 Image Debrief Qualtrics form with faculty as you review your images

 

Telemedicine Patient Encounter

REFRESH

      • If given option, choose template 3rd/4th year
      • This set up must be completed prior to PCE even if you don't have a real patient and will be seeing a SP. Staff will check you off during PCE.
      • Call 470-956-6000 with any EPIC issues
    • Review 
    • Review  (recommend playing at 1.5-2X speed)
    • Review with minor additions to assist with chronic disease/ primary care note documentation
    • Review 
    • Optional Review Block 2 Mentee EMR and MSK telehealth videos as you will be instructing them

PREWORK REQUIRED

  • Review your patient's medical history and prepare for your telemedicine patient encounter    
    • Please send your M1 a [secure] email with pertinent patient information and guidance on your recommendation for what they should cover in the visit.  Your M1 does not have EMR access currently and this is the only way they can review the patient information.
  • Be prepared to assist your M1 setting up your EPIC clinic template. If you haven't logged into EPIC in a month you will need to call the 706-721-7500 number to regain access for lapsing for over a month. For those writing notes in EPIC be prepared to show them how to use the correct template in the EMR (videos above)
  • Be prepared to present objective data and the assessment and plan on the day of the encounter  
  • Recorders are the only ones that write a note and will receive the majority of that note already written from their mentee in a [secure] email or review as an unsigned note in EPIC
  • Watch the and use it to assist with educating your M1s on presenting prior to and during the debrief.

POSTWORK

  • Recorders: Edit and complete your mentee’s note on your patient by 5:00 PM 48 hours after your patient encounter and sign/submit your note to Clinical Experience Preceptor for signature.  Submit to all others as a reviewer: PCL preceptor, primary care physician, and partner.  If have SP encounter, send note the PCE preceptor, PCL preceptor, partner, and mentees.  Your final is sufficient for feedback to your mentees, however you can offer additional constructive feedback as you feel is appropriate.  
  • Once your note is sent to your Clinical Experience Preceptor, fill out to receive documentation feedback.
  • Send feedback received from the Qualtrics survey to your Mentee(s) to review. If you had a SP encounter include your edited note in the email for them to review.
  • Complete the . 
  • If any of the above is not performed you may lose professionalism points.

    • For Block 11, you will be practicing the SECOND half of the RUSH exam including: RUQ, LUQ, Pelvis, Aorta Transverse with measurement, and Gallbladder Longitudinal.   You will have time to practice the first half as well. You will obtain bedside/realtime feedback as you did in Block 10. You will also be assisting Class of 2029 students who will be scanning intro to FAST images.

REFRESH 

  •  M1 students will be performing the FAST exam on their M2 mentor. 
  • M2 students will assist with image acquisition and US debrief performed by faculty. 

OPTIONAL 

  • Ashley Sapp Office Hours for Hands on Scanning (Bring a partner and scan with Ashley)
